Snelston is a small parish with 151 registered voters. We do not have a Civil Parish Council, but rather a Parish Meeting. This is the lowest tier of local government in the UK.
We are responsible for –
- Raising taxes at times (for example when the council’s three grit bins need filling in a harsh winter),
- Giving feedback on applications for planning permission within the parish bounds,
- Dealing with the varied concerns of residents,
- Responding to requirements and queries from our local district and county councils.
Officers of the Parish Meeting are: The chair is currently vacant
Mr Andrew Grenfell, Internal Auditor
Mr David Woods, Responsible Financial Officer
We relate to Derbyshire Dales District Council for matters of planning and setting of council taxes. Our District Councillor is Mr Andrew Shirley. Other matters (education, social care, highways, police, etc.) are dealt with by Derbyshire County Council. Our County Councillor is Mr Steve Bull.
The Parish has three public amenities – a telephone box, a park bench, and one grit bin. So there is very little expenditure in the course of a normal year. However, we do have two organisations in the parish providing a lot of social activity for this small community throughout the year.
The Reading Room is our village hall. Its committee organises a number of events that are entertaining and fun for everyone. Click the link to see their Facebook page.
The Parish Church is our local Anglican church. We are fortunate in having regular services of worship in this church and in being invited to join in the activities they plan for the whole village to join. See the Parish Church page for further information re; times of services.
You may get a sense of the community life of Snelston by reading through the Draft Minutes of our last AGM. You can view these by clicking the link below.
As applications for planning permission are received, they will be posted on this site for interested residents to examine the plans and to comment on them if they wish. Each application is identified by a reference number that can be entered on the Derbyshire Dales District Council website, for access to the relevant documents concerning the application.

Each year, the Parish Meeting is expected to provide a period for the Exercise of Public Rights, when anyone may examine and make copies of the Annual Return relating to parish governance and finances, and may raise questions and/or objections with the external auditor, PKF Littlejohn LLP.
This year, the period will run from 3rd June to 12th July 2019.’
